How Do I applying for
an extension of time to file my tax
return
You can use TaxCut to e-file Form 4868:
Application for Automatic Extension of
Time to file U.S. Individual Income Tax
Return. Or you can use TaxCut to print
the form and mail it to the IRS.
To file an extension with TaxCut:
- If this is a new
return, open TaxCut and on the
Welcome to TaxCut screen, click the
File an Extension button. Follow the
instructions on the screen.
- If you have already
started your return, select the
return by clicking Open return.
- Click the Welcome tab
and then the Extension tab.
- Select Federal
Extension of Time to File, and click
Next.
Do I have to pay the tax
I owe now? Yes. The IRS can give you a filing
extension, but it can't extend the due
date for the tax itself. To avoid
interest and penalties for late payment,
be sure to pay the tax you think you owe
by April 15.
Will the IRS always grant
an extension? Yes. An extension of time to file your
return to October 15 is automatic as
long as you follow the IRS procedures.
What if I don't know how much I'll owe? TaxCut can help you get as close as
possible. Use our Interview to either
quickly complete an extension or to go
through the Federal Interview to more
fully complete the extension. Enter as
much information as you have available
now. You can estimate some numbers if
you have to. It's better to overpay than
to not pay at all. The IRS will assess
interest and, possibly, penalties on any
amount unpaid as of April 15.
How To Make a Payment With TaxCut You can make your payment by electronic
funds withdrawal by selecting that
option on the Payment Due With Extension
screen and then following the
instructions. You will be required to
enter routing and account numbers for
your bank account.
Paying by Check or Money Order When paying by check or money order with
Form 4868, open TaxCut's Help Central
and select How to Use TaxCut. Click on
Filing an Extension, and then select IRS
Extension Mailing Addresses. Make your
check or money order payable to the
United States Treasury. Don't send cash.
Write your Social Security number,
daytime phone number, home address, and
"tax year (i.e. 2008) Form 4868" on your
check or money order. Do not staple or
attach your payment to the form. If you
follow the Interview in the filing
section, TaxCut will give you
instructions on how and where to mail
the extension with or without payment.
Do I need to file a separate extension
form with my state?
In many cases a state extension does not
need to be filed. Depending on the
state, filing a federal extension
automatically files for the state
extension. The states that require a
separate extension to be filed are
listed below.
The following states automatically get
the extension when the federal extension
is filed:
|
Arizona Arkansas California Colorado Delaware Georgia Hawaii Idaho Illinois Indiana Iowa |
Kansas Kentucky
Louisiana Maine Maryland Michigan Minnesota Mississippi Missouri Montana Nebraska New Jersey |
New Mexico North Dakota
Ohio Oklahoma Oregon Pennsylvania Rhode Island South Carolina Vermont Virginia West Virginia Wisconsin |
The following states require a separate
extension to be filed (this must be done
through the state's Web site): Alabama Connecticut District of Columbia Massachusetts New York North Carolina Vermont Virginia States not listed don't have income tax
